Woody Allen - American Apparel Hits Back At Allen

LATEST: Executives at clothing company American Apparel have hit back at WOODY ALLEN's claims they used his image in their advertising without permission, insisting the campaign was meant as a parody.

The veteran director sued the company in March (08), claiming he was never contacted by the firm - which is known for its provocative ads - about the billboard and online advertisements. The ads featured an image - taken from the 1977 movie Annie Hall - of Allen dressed as a Hasidic Jew.

But, according to the New York Daily News, bosses at the company have filed their response in Manhattan Federal Court, stating that their billboards were meant in jest.

The company's lawyer Stuart Slotnick says, "American Apparel is certainly not marketing their casual wear to Orthodox, black hat rabbis."

Billboards in New York and Los Angeles have since been taken down, but the image can still be viewed on the Internet.

The filmmaker is seeking damages of more than $10 million (GBP5 million).

Allston's bad boys of punk eager to kick Ash onstage

Allston's bad boys of punk eager to kick Ash onstage

In order to play punk rock, you have to be volition to make a complete yabbo come out of the closet of yourself - and in public. Allston six Badly Ash isn’t just capable of playacting silly, it revels in it.
“I never played music ahead Bad Ash,” lied vocalist and rhythm guitar player Justin Brooks, gathered with the reside of the band in a practice outer space that resembles the Foot Clan’s lair from the start “Teenage Variation Ninja Turtles” film. “In fact, I made clay pots and walked the earth trying to find oneself God. When I plant Graven image, he wasn’t staggeringly cool down to me, so I decided that if this unit searching for God thing is a bummer, I’ll start a band.”
Most of this interview is also colorful to pass off the examination of the copy desk of a major daily paper. Normal decorousness doesn’t suit Bad Ash, which bring its preference for completely things over-the-top to the Abbey Lounge in Somerville Fri. The band likewise has limited regard for its safety and socially acceptable times for nudeness, specially onstage. Its fixation on goofy toys and costumes plausibly isn’t healthy, either, but it totally comes with the territory of horror-punk mayhem.

For wholly its cartoonish bluster, Bad Ash is far smarter and harder working than you mightiness take. Implementing the best aspects of pop-punk (catchy songs), metal (werewolf-snarl vocals; big, crunchy guitars) and a smattering of ominous trombone, Badly Ash tree betrays a musical theater discernment that sets it supra the horror-punk phalanx.
With three age as a striation under its collective belt and no tag backing, Bad Ash has maintained visibility via abundant touring and self-promotion, and non for naught. The band is becoming a familiar presence on the Hub of the Universe.tv Web site and at horror conventions, and has even landed a few high profile gigs, including porta for the Phenomenauts at the Midsection East on Apr 30.
In mid-May, Bad Ash tree embarks on its secondment national spell. Its mission: Rock everyone’s knickers off. Its secondary objective lens: Observe life story on the route interesting. This a great deal involves inventing and ingesting exciting newly things.
“I had a ambition later observation Fat Boys videos totally dark on YouTube,” said Steve Vautour, too known as the Mizzle, wHO dominates backup vocals and samples. “It was or so a Techno Doughnut; a Dunkin’ Donuts sausage, roger Bacon, egg and high mallow on a glazed sinker that’s cut in half and toasted. We got a wonderful charwoman in Newly House of York to make up it and it was breathtaking.”
Another enlistment finish required the purchase of a flash milk pasteurizer. You don’t want to know more, confidence me.
Badly Ash, with Bean Town Boozehounds, the Trashkillers, Sonic Disorder, and the Welch Boys, at the Abbey Waiting area, Somerville, Friday. Tickets: $8; 617-441-9631.
